Agar Limited has been actively engaged in initiatives that empower communities in arid lands by providing training, equipment, and, most importantly, market access to build and diversify income streams. Since 2017, we've worked with NGOs such as CESVI and COOPI, and from 2019, we collaborated with FAO. In 2020, we became involved in projects led by World Vision Kenya. Our work spans various counties in Kenya, including Samburu, Laikipia, West Pokot, Isiolo, Marsabit, Turkana, Wajir, and Kitui, as well as regions in Uganda such as the Karamoja cluster, Teso, and Elgon.
We are also an executive committee member of the Gum And Resins Association (GARA) and collaborate with institutional partners like KEFRI, KFS, NEMA, NDMA, and County Governments in Kenya and Uganda. Our first grant came from E4IMPACT in 2019, and in 2020, we received a £100,000 grant from the British government through the Kenya Catalytic Job Fund (one of five winners out of 850 applicants) to establish 100 acres of aloe plantations aimed at generating income, regenerating land, and increasing the production of Frankincense and Myrrh essential oils. In 2022, we were awarded another grant from the Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC) to further scale our operations across other counties in Kenya.
Throughout the years, we have conducted feasibility studies, baseline surveys, rapid field assessments, value chain analyses, and resource mapping, while also training communities on technical harvesting of selected value chains and the management of aloe farms. As consultants or partners, we’ve contributed to programs such as IMARA by World Vision, the Wei-Wei River Catchment Restoration Project by ARS Progetti, and GEF-6 by FAO. Our involvement extends to platforms such as the E4IMPACT Accelerator, the KCIC Greenbiz Incubator, the Land Accelerator by the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Build Back Better program by Yunus Social Hub and the Climate KIC Climathon.
We believe in the power of public-private partnerships, having worked closely with both central and local governments to implement sustainable solutions in arid lands.
